In an exciting development for the community, Lumina has partnered with the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute (MFRI) to provide comprehensive solar fire safety training to all firefighters in the state of Maryland. This initiative underscores our commitment to not only advancing solar energy but also ensuring the safety and well-being of our communities.

About the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute (MFRI)

The Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute (MFRI) is the state of Maryland’s primary training and education provider for emergency services. With a mission to enhance the safety and effectiveness of emergency responders, MFRI offers comprehensive training programs, state-of-the-art facilities, and expert instruction.

Headquartered at the University of Maryland in College Park, just outside of Washington DC, MFRI also has six regional training centers positioned throughout the state to deliver training to emergency responders. The training structures that the Lumina team helped MFRI to build will live in all of their permanent facilities to provide their trainees with comprehensive visual aids for solar safety training.

By equipping firefighters and rescue personnel with the latest knowledge and skills, MFRI plays a vital role in protecting the lives and property of Maryland residents, fostering a safer and more resilient community. To learn more about MFRI, visit them HERE

The Importance of Solar Fire Safety Training

As the adoption of solar energy systems continues to rise, it becomes crucial to equip our first responders with the knowledge and skills needed to handle emergencies where solar panels are present. Solar panels and related equipment, while generally very safe, present unique challenges during firefighting operations. Understanding these challenges and knowing how to address them effectively is paramount for the safety of all members of the community.

How It Started

The partnership between Lumina and the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute (MFRI) originated from a practical need to find innovative uses for decommissioned solar panels. With a growing number of maintenance projects, system removals, and reinstallations, solar companies are facing the challenge of managing old panels, which often contain toxic materials and are costly to recycle. Seeking a solution, we connected with MFRI through the Maryland Department of the Environment and the Maryland Department of Energy. These departments recognized the potential synergy between Lumina’s sustainability goals and MFRI’s commitment to fire safety, leading to the development of this groundbreaking solar fire safety training program.

How It’s Going

The partnership between Lumina and the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute (MFRI) is built on a foundation of shared expertise and resources. Located at our headquarters outside of Baltimore, MD, Lumina’s field staff training facility is one of our proudest accomplishments. We provide all Lumina employees comprehensive solar installation training with structures such as mock roofs, electrical boxes, EV chargers, Tesla batteries, harness training equipment, and more. MFRI sought to replicate our success for their fire safety training programs.

Our Safety & Quality Control Department worked closely with MFRI to source materials and construct realistic training structures, showcasing our decommissioned solar panels on pitched roofs and typical home electrical setups. This effort equips firefighters with hands-on experience, addressing one of the many nuances of fire safety. Our collaboration ensures that MFRI’s training programs continue enhancing the safety and preparedness of Maryland’s firefighters in managing any fire emergency.

Exciting Times Ahead

The partnership between Lumina and the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute is a shining example of how collaboration can drive innovation and enhance community safety. By leveraging our expertise in solar technology and MFRI’s dedication to comprehensive emergency training, we are setting a new standard for solar fire safety. This initiative not only addresses the practical challenge of managing decommissioned solar panels but also empowers Maryland’s firefighters with the knowledge and skills they need to respond effectively to solar-related emergencies. Together, we are fostering a safer, more resilient community.

Lumina remains committed to leading the charge in solar energy advancements while prioritizing the well-being of our communities. We look forward to continuing this impactful work and exploring new opportunities to make a positive difference.
