What Are Solar Incentives?

Solar incentives are offerings by governments at the federal, state, or local level meant to encourage the adaption of green energy. Many states and localities have pledges to reach carbon neutrality within a certain timetable, but recognize that government infrastructure alone may not be enough to meet targeted goals. As such, they offer incentives to home and business owners who embrace green energy to help lessen the barrier to transitioning.

Common Types of Solar Incentives

The solar incentives available to you vary by state, as well as city or locality within that state. However, typically solar incentives come in a few different forms focused on mitigating the cost of installation, as well as allow you to benefit from generating excess energy, and energy over time.

Rebates

Rebates are a form of payment where, following the completion of your solar installation, a government entity sends you a cash reimbursement covering a specified amount of the installation. Amounts vary by locality and government.

SRECs

Solar energy renewable credits are a form of payment accessible for generating energy over time. Once you hit the specified threshold (typically one megawatt hour), you can sell them on the SREC market.

Tax Breaks

Tax breaks and exemptions are a common form of incentive, often allowing you to write off some or all of your solar installation costs on your taxes. There may also be incentives that exempt you from sales tax when purchasing panels.

Net Metering

Net metering offers an advantge when you generate more energy than your home or business can use in a day. You have the ability to sell excess energy back to the power grid, and most municipalities will purchase it at market rate.

Going Solar Has Never Been More Affordable

The Federal Solar Investment Tax Credit, or ITC, is the only universal federal incentive for going solar, regardless of your state. The ITC can offer huge tax breaks for making the smart choice to go solar. In 2022, the ITC amount was raised and extended for another decade, meaning it’s never been more affordable to go solar than right now.

Raised to 30% in 2022

In 2022, the federal government passed legislation raising the ITC from 26% to 30%. Before the government took action, the credit was set to taper off beginning in 2023.

30% Credit Until 2032

The current ITC rate will last through 2032, granting you the benefit of a 30% tax credit on your solar panel installation project.

Decreases to 26% in 2033

Beginning in 2033, the Solar Federal Investment Tax Credit will begin to taper out and lower. For systems installed in 2033, the credit reduces to 26% and t0 22% in 2034.
